INDUSTRIAL SILENCERS THAT MAKE NOISE BY BEING QUIET

In the gas transmission industry, wherever gas compression facilities are involved, Burgess-Aarding blow-down silencers can be found.

Noise is a serious and often underestimated source of pollution. At CECO, several brands support our customer's goals to mitigate their noise. It's our mission to help our customers to become quiet and clean. Everywhere around us, there is noise. In the manufacturing or production environment, you often notice that noise sources can increase dramatically, and it is critical to control the noise to ensure the safety of your colleagues and the surroundings of your plant.

Noise sources can include the venting of high-pressure gas during emergency shutdowns, the intake and exhaust of engines, compressors, turbines, turbochargers and vacuum pumps. In addition, valves and controls that experience large pressure drops can create noise at the valves and radiate it along the pipe.

As a leader in silencer technology, Burgess-Aarding has over a century of experience providing industrial silencer solutions. Burgess comes from the company previously named Burgess-Manning, which was established in 1910. Burgess-Manning developed, tested, and operated the first silencer in 1928, which was then acquired by CECO Environmental in 2015.

Separately, CECO Environmental acquired a Dutch company, Aarding, in 2013. Aarding had been developing gas turbine exhaust systems and silencers for the power industry as part of their product offering.

With Burgess-Manning, the leader in industrial silencers and Aarding, the leader in silencer solutions for the power industry, Burgess-Aarding was formed, becoming the worldwide leader in silencer solutions. We continued that winning tradition of providing premier solutions in 2023 when we added Wakefield Acoustics to our product portfolio.

Capitalizing on our extensive experience, we continue to perform research and development with our industrial silencers, including solutions for noise in the Power Energy, Petro Chemical, Aero Engine and Gas Transmission industries. Burgess-Aarding has more than 200,000 pieces of equipment installed worldwide.

Headquartered in the Netherlands, with additional offices in the United States, United Kingdom and Singapore, Burgess-Aarding serves customers in all time zones and locations across the globe. We have an extensive network of fabrication partners in North America, Europe and Asia to meet all logistics challenges, each with unique capabilities to serve our customer needs.

Noise – The Other Pollution

Noise is often overlooked as a source of major pollution. It can cause physical damage as well as psychological issues.

Burgess-Aarding, a CECO Environmental brand, offers leading expertise within industrial acoustics. Our mission is to help make the world cleaner and quieter. We do this by supporting our customers to minimize their acoustical impact.

Midstream OIl and Gas Production

The terms “upstream” and “downstream” in the oil and gas production industry refer to a company's location in the supply chain. Companies in the oil and gas industry are usually divided into one of three groups, upstream, downstream, and midstream.

Some companies are "integrated" because they combine the functions of two or three of these streams. Upstream oil and gas production is conducted by companies who identify, extract, or produce raw materials. Downstream oil and gas production companies are closer to the end-user or consumer. Midstream oil operations link the upstream and downstream entities and mostly include resource transportation and storage services for resources, such as pipelines and gathering systems.

Burgess-Aarding faqs

Our silencers are meant to reduce if not eliminate the physical and psychological damage to people working at or living near industrial plants as well as minimize the effects of industrial noise on the environment.

Burgess-Aarding brand silencers are best suited to the prevention or reduction of noise from fixed installations, as opposed to mobile (over the road) applications. The source of noise could be from an intake or exhaust of an engine, compressor, blower, vacuum pump, turbine, vent/blowdown, control valve, or relief valve. In many cases, our silencers are used where the process is open to atmosphere at the silencer outlet, but we have numerous designs that are equally well-suited to in-process (closed) systems.

In addition to our standard product range, more than 90% of the silencers we deliver are customized to the specific requirements of each customer’s project. Our ability to customize our silencers is key to the success in all aspects of each project. When developing a solution, we not only look at the noise, but also how supply chain affects the project, the cost, and the ability to meet technical requirements. We consider how our design will affect logistics, the actual installation on site, and how the ongoing maintenance will affect the customer.

Our global scale enables us to address five key elements customer concerns:

  • Lead time
  • Cost
  • Local Content
  • CO2 Transportation Emissions
  • Material Availability
