Companies that work with gas chromatography and analytical equipment require experience and up-to-date technical training to ensure analytical equipment is adequately installed and maintained. A chromatograph (i.e.—Gas Chromatograph) is an analytical instrument used to perform analysis on various volatile substances. The main use of a GC is to separate various compounds from a specific sample of gas—ultimately establishing the presence, or measuring, relative proportions of analytes in a mixture.

A gas chromatograph is a complex system able to perform detailed analysis and other functions critical to operational efficiency, while meeting regulations specific to a company’s industry. Different analyzer technologies such as IR, laser, chemometrics, etc. are also efficient tools, and can be used in conjunction with, or in place of a GC. However, an analyzer is often used for garnering specific industry readings or information. As an example, many companies use a UV/Vis, Infrared, or a laser, which is quite popular, to acquire readings.

Both the GC and the analyzer are “smarter” than other instruments though, since instruments (basic level, pressure, temperature and flow), provide only one reading. An instrument can be in a lab or out in the process area though, which offers a greater level of convenience for technicians.

When a GC or analyzer is sold by a manufacturer, they only warranty that equipment at the time. However, with these technologies, there needs to be other equipment in front of the analyzer (or upstream), as part of the process, that clean up the product and provide a reliable and repeatable sample. There is an array of components throughout the system, which include a sample system, filters, a heated transport line (when necessary, in that application), probe, regulator and more.

This means that there are various components within a system that require maintenance, repair and continuous support.

Supporting your Equipment

All equipment will need servicing or replacing at some point. The same goes for a GC, analyzer and instruments. When one of these pieces of equipment goes into alarm, fails, aftermarket warranties run out, resources are about to be retired and more, a company needs someone to come in, analyze the situation, troubleshoot to identify the problem and then repair or replace the equipment.

This is where experience and knowledge of systems from a wide array of manufacturers become critical. When the company calls the manufacturer, the company usually needs to get the system running before the manufacturer can tell them what is wrong with the analyzer. The issue is that the only way to get the system running is to know what component/s in front of the manufacturer’s system are not working. Until the non-warrantied components are fixed (i.e.—calibration gases run out, sample system stream is plugged, check valve failed, transport line issue, plugged probe, etc.), the analyzer will not operate reliably. As a result, the manufacturer will not be able to troubleshoot and repair ‘their’ warrantied equipment. This double-edged sword causes increased time and financial stresses on the company, as well as operational issues at the plant.
