CECO Filters is a major supplier of mist elimination equipment to the sulfuric acid production, sulfuric acid recovery, and sulfonation industries.
In sulfur-burning sulfuric acid production plants, air is dehydrated in the Drying Tower prior to being fed to the sulfur burner. SO 2 gas produced is the burner is converted to SO 3 via catalytic reaction. The SO 3 gas is then absorbed in a re-circulating stream of sulfuric acid in either one or two absorber towers to produce product of a desired concentration. Metallurgical sulfuric acid production plants utilize a similar process route with the exception that the SO 2 gas is provided from a smelting operation.
Sulfuric acid mist carry-over from the Drying Tower and Absorbers is a problem common to sulfuric acid production plants, posing a very real risk of corrosion in downstream equipment. Carry-over in the Intermediate and Final Absorption Towers consists of a mist comprised largely of sub-micron particles. CECO’s high efficiency fiber bed candle filters are utilized in these towers to remove essentially all mist particles greater than 3 microns in diameter and 99.5% of all mist below 3 microns in diameter to protect the down-stream equipment from corrosion. Carry-over in the Drying Tower consists of relatively large particles in the greater than 1 micron range. In this application CECO’s medium or low efficiency fiber bed filters, or high efficiency mesh pad mist eliminators, are utilized to provide a cost-effective method of mist removal.
CECO’s proprietary Graded Bed design provides unsurpassed efficiency and performance in difficult sulfuric acid mist applications.
CECO’s patented Twin-Pak concentric nested filter is ideal for retrofitting existing plants where increased throughput or reduced pressure drop is desired, without extensive modification to the filter vessel or tube-sheet.
